Dirty on Purpose Say Goodbye

My good friends and the band that got me into music management are saying goodbye, and it saddens me. What can I say other than I wouldn't be who I am today without them. I have learned so much over these past five years of working together, and all of the good times we've had on tour, through various releases, and just hanging out with each other. I hope you make it out to the NYE show.

DOP Go Bye-bye

Hello friends,

After six years of spending an unhealthy and unusual amount of time together, Dirty on Purpose is going the way of the dodo. We got back from tour about a month ago and sat down to talk about recording another record, and realized we didn't really want to record another record. Not now anyway. So we're going our separate ways. Our best friends and practice space sharers of many years, A Place to Bury Strangers, offered us the opening slot on their New Year's Eve gig at Mercury Lounge. We thought it was an appropriate way to wind things down and say goodbye to our friends and fans.

Get your tickets now -- it's gonna sell out.

We're still playing music and we hope you'll come support our other projects: Joe and Doug harmonize sweetly in Neckbeard Telecaster; George shreds the bass in Coin Under Tongue; Joe helms Joe and the Flying Spoons; and Doug plays with Purse Snatchers and Black Acid.

Finally, we're all still buddies and live in the same town, so we reserve the right to change our minds and get back together in six months if we feel like it.

Love,
DOP

The Hooters - "And We Danced"

This song has been stuck in my head... my fave lyrics from the ridiculous classic...

And we danced, like a wave on the ocean, romanced, we were liars in love and we danced, swept away for a moment by chance, and we danced and danced and danced!

Howlies - "Chimera"

This Atlanta based band called Howlies played my CMJ party, and if you didn't check them out, I feel sorry for you because they were the shizz and too much fun. I am kind of addicted to listening to their song "Chimera," which you can download for free from their MySpace. It's been on my shuffle for a bit now, and I have it on repeat. The lyrics that stick out the most for this song is "I'm in your imagination, you're in my imagination, it's true, all I see is you." LE SIGH. Try it, I guarantee you will listen to it over and over again for the rest of the day. OH and how come it seems I love bands with singing drummers?

Marnie Stern - "Ruler"

I saw the upcoming video for Marnie Stern's "Ruler" and it does indeed rule. It also really got me into Marnie Stern. She was always one of those names that were floating around, but I never checked out until now. I know I'm a little late to the game, but at least I made it. Eh? Eh? Loves.

Check out her song, "Ruler."

Jinners Hearts Ida Maria

A couple months ago a friend of mine was asking me if Cheeseburger ever played with a singer-songwriter named Ida Maria. I wasn't sure about the answer to that question since it was before the time I started managing them, but I looked up the Norwegian punk songstress and instantly fell in love with her. In fact, I became kind of obsessed. I even tried to get her to play my CMJ party, but she wasn't heading over to the U.S. for the festival... Hopefully she heads our way for SXSW because I simply can't go too much longer without seeing her play live. With songs like "Queen of the World" that begin with "Whiskey, please, I neeeeeeed some whiskey, please, to bring me consciousness and kill my innocence..." how can you go wrong?

Lipstick Jungle

They shoot a lot of scenes of this new "Sex and the City" show called "Lipstick Jungle" in Greenpoint. I walked past Victory Ford's fake store front a month ago.

And yes, I am addicted to watching "Lipstick Jungle" now. Kind of obsessed with the Victory Ford / Joe Millionaire (Andrew McCarthy) romance. I kind of think she's the hottest girl I've seen on TV in a while. I think I need that haircut/style... And Andrew McCarthy? Well he will forever be droolworthy.

You can catch up on all the episodes on Hulu.

Revisiting: The Walkmen - You & Me

What I really love about The Walkmen's latest album You & Me is that it harks back to the Walkmen sound that I fell in love with back in 2003... drenched with haunting, beautiful organ sounds, pierced by Hamilton's distinctive pessimistic growl... it is an album that induces sigh after sigh as each song pulls you into a memory you might rather forget, though not regret.

One of my favorites on the album is the closer, "If Only It Were True," where Hamilton sings, "If only it were true, I'd go with you... if only it were true, I'd say I do... so don't come calling for me, 'cause baby my dream ain't through, and when, when I've had enough, oh then I'll die in dreams of you." So. Good.

Listen here.

Favorite New Singer-Songwriter: Donald Beaman

Donald Beaman, of the Double, has been writing some great solo material. I went to see him perform at Monkeytown during CMJ, and it was a totally captivating performance. Surrounded by movie screens that projected old movie scenes mashed with psychedelic effects, Beaman sat with a guitar and mic and sang eloquent, gentle songs...

Check it out on MySpace.
