#TBT - Sonic Youth & David Bowie

This week I wrote a #TBT post for Sol Republic's blog on David Bowie in light of the news that his retrospective is coming out this November with new, old, and unreleased tracks. Last week, I took a stroll down memory lane, watching a lot of Sonic Youth vids. Check ‘em both out here:

RIP JOAN RIVERS

An inspiration to women with her wit and strong mind. I totally thought she would pull through and recover miraculously. Just shows you that you never know, so take advantage of life like Joan did. Rest in Peace, Joan.

JOE MACHI SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE FINAL!
That’s all I got to say about Last Comic Standing this week. But I don’t think the guy has anything to worry about going forward. Ryan and I saw him perform a year ago at one of the Abexmixture comedy shows at Legion bar, and thought he was hilarious back then — we thought he looked sort of like Howdy Doody, like he was a ventriloquist doll — his stiff posture and wide, unblinking eyes, and nervously high voice definitely added to the humor of his jokes.
LOVE HIM!

What I Gotta Do To See Bridget Everett At Least Once a Month

I’m so obsessed with Bridget Everett - she’s part comedy, part cabaret, part bold and unafraid to push the boundaries of people’s comfort zones.

She’s premiering her new show Rock Bottom at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater in New York in September — and if you haven’t seen her live, you really need to go check her out. She’s been performing monthly shows with her band the Tender Moments (which includes Ad Rock) that are equally raunchy and ridiculous. Rock Bottom takes those shenanigans to another level, adding in truly tender, poignant moments that even made me cry. This kind of laughter is better than any therapy I can think of.

It’s amazing to me that the woman only recently quit her day job, but I’m happy to see she’s blowing up like she deserves to. There’s no one out there like her as a performer, and I’m excited to see where she goes from here.

You may recognize her from Inside Amy Schumer.

She also had a cameo in Sex and the City (though I can’t seem to find a clip of that one on the internetz - UPDATE - here’s the clip! Thanks Katy!).

Check out her music video for “What I Gotta Do” above.

See her at Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival at the Bell House on Sept 18!
